Coagulation or blood clotting is a protective mechanism of the body when bleeding occurs. When a blood vessel is damaged, a series of reactions take place involving substances found in the blood known as clotting factors. They are called this because they contribute to the formation of a blood clot.

international normalized ratio (INR) is calculated from a PT result and is used to monitor how well the blood-thinning medication (anticoagulant) warfarin (Coumadin®) is working to prevent blood clots.
