When is a Power Chair or Scooter Covered by Medicare: A power wheelchair is covered when all of the following criteria are met:
- The patient's condition is such that a wheelchair is required for the patient to complete their daily activities.
- The patient is unable to operate a manual wheelchair.
- The patient is capable of safely operating the controls for the Power
Chair.
- The patient can transfer safely in and out of the Chair and has adequate trunk stability to be able to safely ride in the
Powered Wheelchair.
Medicare Claim Determination Progression for Power Operated device:- Manual Wheelchair - Prove that a Manual type wheelchair is out of the question. The patient must be in such physical condition that they cannot use a
manual wheelchair. This means weak or unusable arms or shoulders, heart
conditions, or whatever reason. This will need to be documented by patient's physician.
- Scooter (POV) - Some patients will be such condition that a Scooter is all that is needed for mobility. Scooters are referred to as POV. Scooters are less expensive than a Power Chair so this is the next logical step for satisfying a patients mobility needs. The Scooters do require use of the upper extremities. Patient must be capable or steering the scooter with handlebars. Many patients fall into this category and are approved for the scooter only and not a power chair. Medicare requires copy of physician's progress notes.
- Power Wheelchair (POW) - If the patient makes it this far in the Medicare Claim Determination Process we know they must be in such physical condition they are physically incapable of operating a Manual Wheelchair or Power Scooter. Likewise, patient is capable of safely operating the (POW) Power Wheelchair. The patient can transfer safely in and out of the Chair and has adequate trunk stability to be able to safely ride in the
Powered Wheelchair. Medicare requires copy of physician's progress notes.
